The child of Grundy Golem (a sarcastic doll sized man with the talent of translation) and Rapunzel (a size changing woman with the talent of quickly growing her hair), Surprise is Xanth's Sorceress of Talents - she can use any talent imaginable once and only once. It has been rumoured that she may be able to use talents again after recharging for a long period of time, but this has yet to be proven. Having been taught self control by Gary Gar, a gargoyle protecting the Swan Knee River, Surprise has learned to control her talents for the most part. She is on occasion, however, as wild and uncontrollable as she was before his tutelage.

As for all things non-Xanthian, Surprise is incredibly innocent. She's only been an inductee to the Adult Conspiracy for three years and really hasn't put that to good use. She's never summoned the stork, though she's read about it, and is incredibly naive and trusting even if the people before her aren't really trustworthy. It isn't that she's stupid, it's simply that in Xanth, things are so very very different.
